General presentation illustration. Bait shape and hook placement vary with hook size and bait condition.

  1. 1Use only a legally obtained crab and check current local collection rules and seasonal restrictions.
  2. 2For a manageable bait, select a firm leg or body section and expose some flesh by cracking the shell.
  3. 3Pass the hook through the exposed firm meat and bring it back through to secure the section.
  4. 4Bind loosely with bait elastic if needed; leave the hook point and barb clear.
